The SCADA market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.01% during the forecast period to reach US$34.519 billion by 2027, from US$22.946 billion in 2020. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition consist of multiple computers, user interfaces, and networked data communications for monitoring machines and the operation processes. This control system integrates hardware and software elements, enabling the firms to monitor and regulate the operational processes locally or remotely while monitoring, collating, and analyzing the data in real-time. Furthermore, it also directly interacts with devices like pumps, sensors, motors, valves, and human-machine interface software. The demand for SCADA in industrial enterprises is high, as it not only processes data rapidly, aiding in smart decision-making but also communicates the issues among systems to decrease downtime, all while maintaining high efficiency. SCADA offers many appealing advantages, including interoperability, scalability, communications, and support, attracting diverse firm owners, including oil and gas, energy, food and beverage, transportation, recycling, and many more, and enabling them to adapt these control systems as their backbone. The global landscape of the SCADA market is segmented based on component types, end-user industry, architecture, and geographical regions.

The emergence of IoT and Industry 4.0 is anticipated to add impetus to the growth of the market in the projected period.

Though IoT and SCADA differ in multiple aspects, they share a common goal. However, the integration of IIoT and SCADA enables a holistic understanding of the entire operational processes in a much more simplified manner. Traditionally, SCADA requires the manual generation of the analytic reports, but this process can be efficiently automated in less time and get quality insights when integrated with IoT solutions. With the advent of IoT, modern SCADA was updated with several appealing parameters such as scalability and data analytics, thus improving the market landscape of SCADA. With the growing stringent compliance requirements, demand for effective production processes and supply chain, product quality, and the need for constant process optimization are adding impetus to the market’s growth. Similarly, the growing trend of digitalization is also another factor aiding the market’s growth. For instance, according to the survey conducted by SAP SE in 2020, of the total 400 worldwide C-level healthcare executives, about 70 percent showed a willingness to digitize their operational processes. Many believe that unlocking real-data insights are critical and indispensable for future value-based business. Though such developments are rapidly accelerating the market growth, the increased prevalence of cybersecurity threats is acting as a challenge for both the SCADA solutions providers and end-user firms.

The multiple strategic deployments by public and private firms in the SCADA market in the global landscape are anticipated to drive the market’s growth in the forecasted period.

To meet the growing demand for data analytics and operational process management, many firms are gearing up their statistical approaches to enhance their operations and presence in the market. For instance, in September 2021, PVVNL (Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited), a power distribution company, announced its intention to launch a SCADA solution in Noida to enhance its network reliability, reduce costs, improve consumer satisfaction, and enhance the safety of the workers. Another example of this is Schneider Electric, the global provider of digital transformation in automation and energy management, which launched a GEO SCADA service in July 2021. This technology was launched as a  managed service to aid the consumer in sharing the responsibility of maintaining and managing its telemetry system along with Schneider. Furthermore, this service also enhances the architecture of internal support, facilitating the domain experts to focus on the development of the estate solely.

In addition, Delta Electronics Inc. announced its 100 percent acquisition of Trihedral Engineering Limited, a Canadian IIoT and SCADA software company, in May 2020. This acquisition is said to combine the former’s hardware with the latter’s software in the data analytics,  artificial intelligence, and automation field while solidifying its sales. Also, in December 2021, Inframark, a wastewater management system, acquired Atlanta-based MR Systems Inc., automation, instrumentation, process controls, and SCADA solutions provider for the wastewater and municipal segment. This acquisition enables the two to develop embedded SCADA solutions to offer innovative and advanced cybersecurity and automation solutions suitable for any facility within the commercial and industrial industries of water and wastewater management. Similar developments among many other firms across multiple industries are driving the SCADA market’s growth onward in the projected period.

COVID-19 Insights

COVID-19 has slowed down the SCADA  market. The lockdown, social distancing, and subsequent closure of production sites across the globe due to a surge in active cases negatively affected the productivity of several firms. The lack of manpower, stringent border controls, port closures, and reduced air transport availability were a few of the factors that affected the market and caused it to slow down. Consequently, the aforementioned factors led to the recession in the economy across the globe. Due to the limited funds amidst the crisis, many projects were halted at future dates, thus decreasing the market growth. Nevertheless, post-pandemic, the market is expected to show positive growth owing to an increase in demands for semiconductors in many industries to meet the need for rapid automation adoption.
