The Europe animal feed market was valued at US$70,079.679 million in 2021.
Animal feed plays an important character in worldwide food production since it enables the economic production of animal additives. Animal feed is the most important source of nutrition intake by animals that ensures improved immunity, accelerated growth, and good health. The prospering trade between the European countries is expected to benefit the overall market. For instance, Spain is one of the top animal feed manufacturers in Europe. As a result, export is one of the key reasons propelling Spain's animal feed business to other European countries. German, French, Italian, and Portuguese consumers make up most of Spain's large meat export market. In 2021, the European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) reported that the production of compound feed for farm animals in the EU-27 countries reached 150.2 million tonnes, up 0.03% from 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the grain market rally, the skyrocketing grain prices, and the development of animal diseases in 2021 managed to stabilize or slightly boost their production.
The market growth is attributed to the growing meat consumption along with the rising demand for animal-based products in the region coupled with favorable government policies such as the European Common Agricultural Policy, which is expected to begin operations in 2023. Additionally, the government of the UK in 2020, launched a project worth GBP24 million in order to fund agri-tech projects across the UK. Through this initiative, Deep Branch, a Nottingham-based biotech company that generates clean and sustainable animal feed for fish and poultry received funding worth GBP 2 million. Additionally, The European Union authorized the use of animal feed derived from insects in poultry feed in August 2021. The stable demand for chicken meat products has been shown in the figure below.
With the rising meat consumption in the region, the producers have also been focusing on production methods in order to meet consumer demand. To meet this rising meat consumption, the need for meat production increased, thus propelling an increase in demand for animal feeds as well. Further, according to Eurostat, pig meat production increased from 23 million tonnes in 2020 to 23.4 million in 2021 due to the rising consumption of meat in the region. Thus, with the growing consumption of meat in the region, meat production is also projected to grow, which is likely to drive the animal feed market significantly in Europe.
Further, major companies are entering into strategic alliances to cater to this rising demand and increase their market share in the coming years, this will further aid in the market development of the animal feed market. For instance,
- In May 2022, Cherkizovo, Russian meat, and poultry producer acquired the Russian fast-food business Sibylla Rus from the Atria group. In September 2019, EW Nutrition partnered with the Russian feed producer VitOmek. This partnership between the two companies focuses on high results to bring rich benefits in the form of joint development, creation of unique products and services, etc.
- AB Agri invested in building a poultry feed mill in the East of England in the UK in February 2021. The investment aimed to cater to the need for more protein products for more productivity, and improved animal feed quality, reliability, and efficiency. Moreover, ForFarmers and 2Agriculture, leading suppliers of poultry feed, merged in July 2022 to serve their increasing customer base and enhance their feed portfolio in the poultry sector.
COVID-19 Impact on the Europe Animal Feed Market
The COVID-19 pandemic impeded the European animal feed market from expanding to its full potential. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease hurt the market growth, particularly during the year 2020 which is attributed to the disruption in the supply chain activities due to trade restrictions in European countries and a decrease in meat consumption on account of growing health concerns amid the pandemic coupled with the closure of malls, restaurants, and hotels causing a slump in the food service sector. According to the International Grains Council (IGC), the abundant pasture supply and the continued low HRI activity in 2020 prevented a repeat of the record feed production levels seen in 2019.
