The aerogel market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 16.54% during the forecast period to reach US$2.204 billion in 2026.

Aerogel is an ultralight porous material made from gel. The only difference is that the liquid component of the gel is turned into gas. This turns the gel into a solid form, having extremely low density and thermal conductivity. Aerogels are made from a variety of chemical compounds. The first aerogels were produced using silica gels. They are mostly solid, rigid, and dry. They have a porous solid network that contains air pockets (comprised 99.8% air). They are mostly used for insulation, cleaning up spills, imaging devices, paints, and cosmetics.

aerogel market

A major reason for the growth of this market is the benefits of aerogel over the traditional materials used in insulation.

Traditional materials used in insulation mineral wool, stone wool, rock wool have certain drawbacks as they can cause irritation in skin and the lungs if breathed in. They are made up of tiny pieces of glass and stone, which when inhaled inside can cause damage to the lungs. Moreover, in the case of new construction, thick layers of these materials are used which often result in the loss of floor space. For old buildings, it gets even tougher to incorporate floor changes using these materials as they can entirely change the appearance of the house. In order to overcome such problems, aerogels are considered to be an ideal substitute for these traditional methods of insulation.

The properties of aerogel and the rising demand for aerogel blanket is expected to drive the demand for this market in the forecast period.

Usage of aerogels often leads to low density, low thermal conductivity, and less thickness. This helps in saving a substantial amount of energy, which otherwise would have been wasted for heating and cooling purpose. This will help in driving the growth of the aerogel market. Also, there is an increased demand for aerogel blankets. The aerogel blanket is highly insulting and is used in the construction, oil and gas, and automotive industries. Also, the blankets can be cut according to the requirement.

The demand for an aerogel blanket is expected to fuel the growth of the market.

The low conductivity and small pores of aerogel is anticipated to fuel the growth of this market

The conductivity of aerogels is highly lower than conventional insulation materials. The conduction is minimized using the solid structure and air molecules. It helps in reaching the same insulation level with a lesser requirement of aerogel material as compared to conventional insulation products. The width of the pores lying in the conventional insulation materials ranges to 1mm whereas that of aerogel, the pores are as small as 20 nm. This helps in saving a lot of space. This property of aerogel further pushes its demand.

The geographical share of the aerogel market across the globe

North America is projected as the largest region in terms of both consumption and production of aerogels. It's not only the leading region in the production of aerogel but also, a leading region in terms of product innovation and quality. The growing use of aerogel in the automotive industry, marine industry, and aerospace industry is expected to drive the aerogel market globally. The demand for aerogel in the European region is expected to grow due to the various insulation regulations. The demand in Europe is mainly driven by the oil and gas industry and the housing industry. UK and France are projected to contribute significantly to the European aerogel market. Asia Pacific region is also expected to create a strong foothold in the aerogel market.

The rise in the oil and gas industry is also expected to positively affect this market.

The oil and gas industry is involved in the day-to-day exploration, extraction, refining, and selling. The investment made in this industry is quite high and the industry generates high revenue and contributes significantly to the growth of the economy. In the oil and gas industry, more durable aerogel blankets are used which helps in improving insulation in oil and gas pipelines. It thereby helps in reducing installation cost, the amount of steel used in pipeline construction, and improving resistance. The oil and gas industry is projected to grow rapidly and thus would help in driving the growth of aerogel across the growth.
