The North America Probiotics market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.38% to reach US$23.667 billion by 2027, from US$10.454 billion in 2020.

Probiotics are living microorganisms that have health benefits when they are either consumed or applied to the body. It contains good bacteria that help in digesting food, destroy disease-causing cells, and produce vitamins. In order to maintain a healthy balance in the body, probiotics are helpful. In yogurt, probiotics are naturally found. Moreover, a study took place at the University of Calgary in Canada. The study suggested that probiotic supplements can be helpful to form a healthy microbiome in the gut of newborn infants who are born without a fully formed gut microbiome. The reports suggested that a daily probiotic supplement that contains the right type of microbes prompts a rapid transition of the gut microbiome toward a healthy gut, in breastfed infants born during the study term. The mature microbiome is found to be more stable, and more resilient. Furthermore, it was also linked to reduced inflammation in the babies’ gut.

The increased role of probiotics in preventive healthcare

North American countries are highly developed. The adjusted net national income per capita in 2020 was $53,329 for the United States and $35,025 for Canada. High disposable income indicates better yet hectic lifestyles. Consequently, the working population is also conscious about their health and is willing to keep themselves healthy and fit and are actively taking preventive healthcare measures despite the time constraints. Probiotic intake is considered healthy and a smart choice among them due to its clinically proven health benefits.

Business strategies such as mergers and acquisitions, the development of new products, joint ventures, and expansion are also being adopted to meet the increasing demand. For instance, in August 2020, PURICA formed an alliance with one of the global leaders in probiotics, Kaneka to offer optimal strains in Canada with specific health benefits for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, and also provide immune, digestive, and intensive gastrointestinal support. A customized line of probiotics was launched through this partnership. Similarly, in September 2020, Lonza and Synbiotech alliance launched a new and unique probiotic strain in North America. The TWK10® probiotic is targeted toward sports nutrition. The vegan probiotic supports increased butyrate-producing bacteria in the gut.  The bacteria help in increasing the energy metabolism of the body.

Furthermore, due to the increased demand for probiotics, individuals opt for products that contain probiotics. This shows that consumers are taking a more proactive approach to their health as they look to research and seek out products that have the specified ingredients that would boost their health. With busy schedules, the audience prefers to purchase food and drink products that offer probiotics over supplements as food and drink products are easier to incorporate into daily diets. Moreover, food and drink products offer a sensory appeal. Consumers often seek this attribute along with convenience. In addition, in order to utilize the business opportunity, many product launches are being made in the North American region. For example, GoodBelly, a US-based company, launched a new probiotic product line in the form of shakes and juices owing to its growing demand. The GoodBelly protein shake contains 40 billion probiotic cultures per bottle along with 15 grams of plant-based protein, on the other hand, the juice drink targets the digestive system. The product contains 20 billion probiotic cultures per bottle.
