Chewing gum has been in existence since ancient times, for instance, Native American Indians and Inuit chewed gum from spruce trees, which was a custom adopted by the Europeans who settled in New England. Chewing gum comes in two types, regular chewing gum and sugar-free chewing gum. Regular sugar-containing chewing gum may contain fermentable carbohydrates known as Monosaccharides and disaccharides, which can be metabolized by the bacteria (S. mutans and Lactobacillus app.) in a person's mouth. This bacterium can then produce acid and biofilm which can cause enamel demineralization and further create cavities or infection to the teeth. Whereas sugar-free chewing gum, as per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is required to contain less than 0.5g of sugar per serving. It has been proven from clinical trials that people who chewed on sugar-free gum for 20 minutes have decreased cases of caries (infection to the teeth).
Chewing Gum Market Trends:
The market is divided by product type, which are sugar-containing chewing gum and sugar-free chewing gum. Sugar-containing chewing gum contains fermented carbohydrates such as monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, galactose) or disaccharides (sucrose, maltose, lactose). Whereas sugar-free chewing gum contains polyols such as sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol or mannitol, for sweetening the gum. Some products in the market are approved by the American Dental Association because they prove that the product is sugarless, effective and safe for the teeth. Even though sugar-free chewing gums are proven to be good for the teeth, the ADA still recommends brushing and flossing the teeth regularly. There are multiple benefits to the health as well from chewing gum, a few of which include maintaining tooth mineralization and neutralising plaque acid, convenience of taking vitamins and minerals, maintaining clean teeth, promoting concentration, relief from dry mouth, and helping to support smoke cessation.
