Mashed Potatoes are becoming more popular in Japan as a side dish or ingredient in western-style cuisine. Mashed potatoes are commonly found in restaurants that serve hamburgers, fried chicken, and other western-style dishes. In Japanese supermarkets, instant mashed potato mixes can be prepared by adding hot water or milk. Some of these instant mashed potato mixes are flavored with Japanese ingredients such as soy sauce or wasabi. There are also some variations of mashed potato dishes that are unique to Japan. For example, "poteto salada" (potato salad) is a popular side dish in Japanese cuisine that features mashed potatoes mixed with mayonnaise, sliced cucumbers, and other ingredients. The surging popularity of mashed potatoes in Japan is a result of multiple factors, including the upsurge in potato production and consumption, evolving food preferences, and the versatility and convenience of this dish.

The increased production and consumption of potatoes in Japan have led to a surge in the mashed potato market within the country.

According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, potato production in the country has undergone a rise, increasing from 2.20 million tonnes in 2016 to 2.40 million tonnes in 2019. The country's northern regions, such as Hokkaido, are particularly well-suited to potato farming due to their cooler temperatures. In addition, the soil conditions in Japan are often ideal for potato cultivation, with well-draining, loamy soils that allow for healthy root growth and ample access to nutrients. Finally, Japan's advanced agricultural technology and farming practices have made potato cultivation more efficient and productive. Overall, the combination of a favourable climate, suitable soil conditions, and advanced agricultural practices make potato cultivation relatively easy and successful in Japan. Furthermore, data from the FAO reveals a noteworthy increase in potato yields in Japan, with production rising from 28.48 tonnes per hectare in 2016 to an impressive 31.46 tonnes per hectare in 2020. Based on Faostat, Japan's overall potato consumption totalled 2,243 kt in 2020, while the country's per capita potato consumption reached 17.7 kg in the same year. The mashed potato industry in Japan has experienced growth, driven by various factors, including the country's steady increase in total agricultural output in recent years. Reports from the United States Department for Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service indicate that Japan's total agricultural output rose from US$ 27.38 billion in 2011 to US$ 28.84 billion in 2019, providing an impetus for the industry's expansion.
