The monosodium glutamate (MSG) market is projected to show steady growth during the forecast period.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), also known as sodium glutamate or umami seasoning, is a popular food flavour enhancer/ seasoning that provides a delicious taste to food. It is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, a non-essential amino acid found in many foods like meat, fish, vegetables and cheese. MSG has been an ingredient included in controversy because of concerns about its potential side effects about being harmful to health but the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have proven the safety of consumption of MSG with the recommended Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), which is 30mg/kg of body weight per day of a person.

Introduction:

MSG is a common ingredient used by various cuisines worldwide to enhance the flavour of their food. It is also known as ‘Umami’ and is a common amino acid found in many foods like meat, fish, vegetables and dairy products. Due to the common use of MSG in many Asian cuisines, it is expected for the market to grow at a faster pace. As food cultures are being shared between countries due to tourism, the MSG market is also expected to grow at a steady pace in the upcoming years.

Growth Drivers:

  • Rising Demand for Processed Food and Fast Food: Convenient and ready-to-eat food options are in greater demand due to urbanization and fast-paced lives. Fast food and processed food chains have grown incredibly handy, and because MSG improves flavour and taste, it is often included in these items.
  • Increasing Meat Consumption: It is anticipated that meat consumption will rise steadily worldwide, especially in developing nations. It is projected to increase by 14% by 2030 compared to the base average period of 2018-2020. Globally, poultry meat is expected to represent 41% of all meat sources, along with beef (20%), pigmeat/bacon (34%), and sheep meat (5%).
  • Increase in demand for Plant-based products: There has been an increase in demand for plant-based/ vegan products and due to the hike in demand, MSG is being researched for use on such products. For instance, the Ajinomoto Group has been developing MSG to mimic or even improve the taste of plant-based products with meat-like taste and texture.
  • Expanding food industry: Urbanization and growing disposable income are the main drivers of the food and beverage industry's fast global expansion. The expansion of the food and beverage sector will have a direct impact on the growth of the MSG market. It is also a component of most meat and dairy products. As per the FAO report 2023, In April 2023, poultry meat had rebounded from a continuous decline and import demand had increased from Asia.  The increase in production of meat only increases each year, at a slow but steady pace.

Key Players:

  • Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (Japan): One of the largest producers of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), the first of its kind. They are a major producer of MSG in Asia and have a growing presence in North America and Europe.
  • Fufeng Group (China): One of the leading suppliers of MSG to the food and beverage industry in China.

Meihua Holdings Group (China): Meihua Holdings Group produces a variety of MSG products, and is one of the major influences in the Chinese market.
