The Spain probiotics market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.09% over the forecast period to reach a market size of US$1,342.632 million in 2027 from US$1,118.577 million in 2020.

The rise of convenience snacking has led to the supplementing of one’s diet with highly processed foods that have eventually led to a rise in non-communicable diseases in affluent nations. The improper balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates has been increasingly linked with the development of chronic and systemic ailments. Supermarket food has distorted the very concept of what farm to fork once meant. Thus, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the effects of their habits. Therefore, in cognizance of this consumer trend that is surging upward, various developments have taken place in the Spainish Probiotics Market. In May 2019, OptiBiotix Health announced that it would be involving its Lactobacillus Plantarum (LPLDL) probiotic strain as the UK-based firm signed a license agreement with a Spanish personalized nutrition firm Spanish Institute of Personalised Nutrition (IENP). It was a three-year agreement, a deal that grants them non-exclusive rights to manufacture and market food supplements containing OptiBiotix LPLDL in Spain. LPLDL is one of several OptiBiotix products, offering a natural, scientifically-backed alternative to improve blood lipid proles, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels without known side effects. Further, in September 2019, because of Kaneka’s interest in involving health and nutrition firms, it acquired the Spanish-based AB-Biotics, which among others had business activities in probiotics that included a collection of bacterial strains that contained more than 550 different wild-type strains that are used to address irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), reduce LDL- cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and infant colic within its ambit.

Besides human consumption, the upward trend in pig meat production continued to boost the growth of the market during the forecast period.

This also creates a fertile opportunity for the inclusion of probiotics in animal feed. Furthermore, pig production practices in Spain are changing to meet new regulatory and welfare requirements, simultaneously employing an integrated model and focus on the export market.  In recent times, it has been realised that supporting the development of a healthy gut in pigs does not rely on antibiotic use, but changes in nutrition and management may be needed.  After a series of trials, it was found that the inclusion of probiotics in pig feed increased weight gain and decreased mortality in young animals in specific circumstances. Moreover, Spain accounts for 27.4% of the main sheep meat-producing member states of the EU, subsequently offsetting the decline in sheep meat production in 2020 [Source: Agriculture, forestry and fisheries in the EU: key messages, EUROSTAT]. According to EUROSTAT, the production of meat: sheep and goats in Spain in December 2021 was 130.46 thousand tonnes. These developments are poised to fuel the healthy growth of the market during the forecast period.
