It is one of the most common dishes of the fast-food type and can also be used as a side dish or a base dish for main courses. Washington and Wisconsin followed closely with around 90,000 cwt and 30,000 cwt of potato production in 2021. Texas and Florida were the lowest potato-producing states with nearly 10,000 cwt production in 2021. The total production was 410 million cwt in 2021. US$ 3.91 billion worth of potatoes were sold in 2021, which was an almost 7% increase from 2020. The potato retail sales increased in dollar sales by 17.8% from July – September 2022. The rise in demand and consumption of fast food due to its convenience and taste also lead to the growth of this market. According to reports from CDC between 2015-2018, around 36.3% of children and teenagers consumed fast food on a given day. The average percentage of calories consumed from fast food increased from 10.6% in 2010 to 18.0% in 2018.

  • The USDA announced in January 2023 that it will be providing funding of US$ 6.8 million for the Potatoes and Pests – Actionable Science Against Nematodes initiative.
  • In September 2021, Idahoan Foods started a tour called “Mashed in America” to increase the sales of mashed potatoes by providing samples of the dish to sports fans and concertgoers. This will be the first immersive mashed potato experience.
